We’re delighted to announce the launch of Experimental Methods and Children’s Social Care: The Contribution of Randomised Controlled Trials, co-edited by David Westlake from CASCADE, alongside Michael Sanders (School for Government, King’s College London) and Vanessa Hirneis (The Policy Institute, King’s College London).
Published in October 2025, this timely and insightful volume brings together leading voices in social care research to explore the use of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in children’s social care and child protection. Through rich case studies and critical reflections, the book examines how experimental methods can generate actionable evidence, support better resource allocation, and ultimately improve outcomes for children and families.
The editors and contributors address both the promise and the complexity of applying RCTs in sensitive and multifaceted social care settings. They also consider alternative approaches, such as quasi-experimental designs, and reflect on lessons learned and future directions for research and practice.

This book is an essential resource for researchers, students, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to deepen their understanding of evidence-based approaches in children’s social care. It highlights the importance of rigorous methodology in shaping effective interventions and guiding policy decisions.
Congratulations to David and the editorial team on this important contribution to the field.
