We are delighted to celebrate Professor Andy Pithouse, who has recently been awarded an MBE for services to social care and education policy.

Andy has made a significant and lasting contribution to social work research, both in Wales and internationally. His work has helped shape how social work is understood, studied and valued, influencing generations of researchers and practitioners.

Most of Andy’s impressive career in children’s social care research predated the establishment of CASCADE but he has always been very supportive of the centre and continues to be as Emeritus Professor. He was a co-investigator on the evaluation of the Frontline pilot which was an early CASCADE study. He is still often cited in the field for his much earlier work on social work as an ‘invisible trade’, stemming from his own PhD research, conducted in the 1980s. This was one of the first ever ethnographic studies of social work and it stands the test of time.

Andy’s recognition through this honour reflects not only his academic contribution, but his ongoing commitment to strengthening the field of children’s social care and supporting those working within it.
