We’re excited to share that an article co-written by members of CASCADE’s parents’ group has been published in the British Journal of Social Work.
Titled “Critical Reflections on Public Involvement in Research: Involving Involuntary Recipients of Social Services to Improve Research Quality”, the article explores what meaningful involvement looks like when working with parents who have lived experience of children’s social care. Co-authored by parent contributors, alongside CASCADE researchers Sally, Elaine, and Rachael, it offers both personal insight and critical reflection—highlighting how co-production can lead to stronger, more relevant research.
One anonymous peer reviewer described the work as “unique and powerful”, and praised the honesty and care at the heart of the group’s approach. The article is also a valuable resource for anyone considering working with public contributors in the field of children’s social care’, and can help explain the contribution of standing advisory groups in this field.

The publication has been a proud and emotional moment for the parents involved. One parent shared:
“I think it’s fantastic. I have come so far over the last six years. Where I have felt like nothing before, now I feel like I can do anything I set my mind to and I feel worthy.”
Another said:
“It feels really empowering and surreal to be just a small part of something so big.”
This is a momentous achievement for our public involvement team and for the parents who continue to shape our work.
